Applying for a visa
Before travelling to study or work in Canada, you may need to apply for a visa. There are different types of visa, depending on your reason for entering the country. You can check visa requirements for immigration to Canada with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
If you want to study at university or college in Canada, you will need to be accepted by a designated learning institution. You can find a list of institutions on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website.
To be accepted, you will need to meet the English language requirements of the designated learning institution and many of them accept Cambridge English exams. Find out who accepts our exams in Canada.
For other visa categories, such as immigration, part of your application may involve proving you have a specified level of ability with English.
If you are required to take an English language test as part of your visa application, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the only internationally available test of English proficiency accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for immigration purposes. Immigration candidates are awarded points according to the score they achieved in the IELTS General Training module. For further details visit www.cic.gc.ca
