Language teaching in Spain has made enormous progress in recent years, with dramatic growth in the number of bilingual schools, more effective teaching of young learners and numerous regional programmes which integrate international certification in both state and religious schools. Nevertheless, the results of the 2012 European Survey of Language Competences show that Spanish children still leave school with a much lower level of language skills than children from many other countries.
This invitation-only conference will look at some of the factors underlying effective language teaching and learning in Spain and other countries and will provide an opportunity for policy makers, curriculum planners, academics and other specialists to share their experiences. We will consider what is really meant by multilingual education and how it can be successfully implemented.
Speakers already confirmed for the event include:
- Kristina Cunningham, Multilingualism Unit, Directorate General for Education and Culture, European Commission, Belgium
- Professor Gisella Langé, Ministry of Education, Italy
- Professor Péter Medgyes, Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary
- Professor Ana Halbach, Universidad de Alcalá, Spain
- Helder Sousa, Instituto de Avaliação Educacional (IAVE), Ministério da Educação e Ciência, Portugal
- Dr Nick Saville, Cambridge English, UK
Throughout the forum, our focus will be on practical issues in implementing language education programmes, with a particular focus on developing and empowering teachers to deliver effective language teaching.
This event forms part of a global series which will be filmed and made available online to encourage wider discussion of innovations and best practice in language education.
