The pretesting process is carried out by a team of dedicated pretest administrators. They allocate each pretest to a range of participants, whose first language group, age and background mirrors the live candidature, and send the completed pretests for marking by a team of the same general markers and examiners who mark the live test. This ensures that the same standards are applied in pretest marking as in live marking.
The pretest administrators then carry out the preliminary analysis of the marks to generate the scores for centres as quickly as possible before passing the score data on to the Cambridge English Data & Analytics team for more detailed statistical analyses.
They also collate the valuable feedback that teachers and participants at pretest centres provide.
